As you may well remember, earlier in the year we asked the children of Great Britain to design a meal that they thought British ESA astronaut Tim Peake would like to eat in space.
The winners of the competition were announced in July (video below) and since then work has been full steam ahead to create the dishes that will actually go into space.
Winners
In September, the winners were invited to Bray, to meet Heston Blumenthal’s team who are developing the recipes and to see their meals come to life. It was a very productive day, and the chefs took lots of inspiration from the winner’s suggestions. As well as trying their food, the winners were able to speak to Tim via a weblink and they built rockets that then launched samples of their food into a very low earth ballistic trajectory. All of the parachutes deployed and the food was safely returned to Earth.
Since then Heston and his team have been developing their meals, and learning all about the constraints of making food fit for space travel. They have been working with a team in France who have experience in producing astronaut food, and the menus are now well on their way to final production, ready for shipment to ESA and NASA next year. The food should then head into space sometime next year, ready for Tim’s arrival at the International Space Station in November 2015. Tim is really looking forward to eating Heston's creations in space!
